A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
