Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, after an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
