European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
