In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
