Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical biological terror, but within Together exists a profound examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story starts when the couple move from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
